Exclusive: Hear TANKENGINE cover PJ Harvey from the Cruel Nature Records compilation ‘Spectrum’

A lot of smart people decided that 2013 would be the year to kick off a new adventure in the music world. Who you ask? Well, us for starters – Birthday Cake For Breakfast celebrates 10 years in 2023! It’s not just us either, as there’s a 10 year badge of honour too for Newcastle Upon Tyne based DIY label Cruel Nature Records, who themselves have been “channelling sonic diversity since 2013“.

With a seemingly never-ending conveyor belt of choice releases over their ten years in the game, the label are celebrating the occasion with the release of ‘Spectrum‘, a 23 track compilation, featuring a number of exclusives from artists that have contributed to the label over the decade.

One such outfit that have worked with Cruel Nature Records over the years is local Newcastle trio TANKENGINE, featuring former members of yourcodenameis:milo and Lingua Vulgaris. Following the release of a number of EPs on the label (the conveniently titled ‘TANKENGINE‘, ‘TANKENGINE TANKENGINE‘ and ‘TANKENGINE TANKENGINE TANKENGINE‘), for ‘Spectrum‘ they’ve offered up a cover of PJ Harvey’sThe Glorious Land‘, from her Mercury Prize winning album ‘Let England Shake‘. You can here it for yourself below.

Available 20 April 2023 on double cassette, 100% of profits from the compilation will be donated to The Toby Henderson Trust, an independently funded charity supporting autistic children, young people and adults, their families and carers in North East England. On the compilation, label owner Steve Strode had this to say:

Cruel Nature celebrates its 10th birthday in April and I’m marking the occasion by curating a compilation featuring exclusive tracks from some of the artists who have contributed to the label. It’s almost 2 hours of music, released as digital and double-tape, featuring Aidan Baker, Clara Engel, Empty House, Whirling Hall Of Knives, Mirrored Lips, Pound Land, Kitchen Cynics, Charlie Butler, Katie Gerardine O’Neill, amongst others.
